Alexandria, Virginia, September 10, 2021—The Council on Legal Education Opportunity, Inc. (CLEO) has opened its call for nominations for the CLEO EDGE Awards for its 53rd Anniversary. The CLEO EDGE Honors Reception will be held virtually on Thursday, November 18, 2021, beginning at 6:00pm ET.
National Education Association (NEA) Vice President Princess Moss will be part of a discussion focused on “The Safe Return in 2021: Back to School, This is the Year!” Joining her are Dr. Karla Paylor, a Maryland-Licensed Pediatrician; Dr. Kellie McCants-Price, a Maryland-Board Certified Child Psychologist; and Subramonianpillai Teal, a Maryland-Licensed Certified Social Worker-Clinical.
Return On Saturday, August 28th, as we approach the end of summer and the beginning of the 2021/22 school year, CLICKS will present our next virtual townhall for teens and adults. As we know, our communities and schools face many challenges when it comes to the decision of returning to in-person learning.
On Thursday, August 19, 2021 CLEO inc will host it’s 2nd Annual Virtual Class Reunion & Open House. We invite everyone who has previously attended a CLEO program and all of our many friends and supporters from the legal community to join us! This great one-hour event will feature CLEO program and service highlights, plus networking opportunities!
On Saturday, March 27th, CLICKS will host a virtual townhall for teens and adults regarding the realities of interactions with law enforcement and the glaring disparity in media coverage of these encounters when involving Black girls and women. This discussion will examine the adultification of young Black girls, implicit biases towards Black women, and the need for social justice movements to become more gender inclusive.
Political leader Stacey Abrams will be recognized for her lifetime achievements during the CLEO EDGE Virtual Honors reception on November 12, 2020. Candidate for Governor of Georgia, Minority Leader of the Georgia House of Representatives, and Founder of the Fair Fight Action, a national voting rights organization, Abrams will receive the CLEO EDGE Vernon E. Jordan, Jr. Heritage Award. The Award honors a person who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in Education, Diversity, and Greater Equality in the legal profession and society.
For the first time in its 52-year history, the Council on Legal Education Opportunity, Inc. (CLEO) will host its major programs online to reach its diverse audiences during 2020 in response to the novel coronavirus.
“Like numerous nonprofit and for-profit organizations globally, the Council on Legal Education Opportunity, Inc. has been seriously impacted by recent events related to the coronavirus pandemic,” said Cassandra Sneed Ogden, CLEO’s Chief Executive Officer. “Our summer programs going virtual is in response to this unparalleled phenomenon.”
On Saturday, November 23, 2019, in a town hall setting at the University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law, teenagers, along with their parents, from across the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia, will gather to discuss social justice issues that concern them.
Boston attorney, business leader, and 71st governor of Massachusetts Deval L. Patrick will be recognized for his lifetime achievements during the CLEO EDGE Honors reception on November 7. Patrick, Managing Director of Bain Capital Double Impact, will receive the CLEO EDGE Vernon E. Jordan, Jr. Heritage Award. The Award honors a person who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in Education, Diversity, and Greater Equality in the legal profession and society. Vernon E. Jordan, Jr., who received the inaugural CLEO EDGE Heritage Award during the organization’s 50th anniversary in 2018, will present the award to Mr. Patrick.
