Erica Rollins Hilliard

J.D., University of Mississippi School of Law, 2012

Current Position: Law Clerk, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Alabama

Ole Miss Law provided me with hands on experience and diverse opportunities that propelled my legal career. I learned from experts, served as a limited practice attorney, argued before the Mississippi Court of Appeals and served as an intern for the U.S. Department of Justice and a Fortune 100 corporation. Ole Miss Law provides students with the tools to tackle the challenges of our ever-evolving world.

Five Things I Love About Living in Oxford:

  1. Great running lanes and bike lanes throughout town
  2. Having students and fellow faculty as neighbors
  3. The peacefulness on Saturday and Sunday mornings. It’s been a great writing spot for me. I am convinced the spirit of Faulkner makes Oxford a wonderful environment for writers.
  4. Right now: the gorgeous fall foliage
  5. Having a wonderful community of friends who are always there to help

“I want to be a voice for people who otherwise couldn’t afford effective legal counsel.  I want to help equal the playing field.  Because justice isn’t just about how much money you have in your pocket.”

“I chose Ole Miss law because of the welcoming, friendly atmosphere I first experienced at Admitted Student Day and its strong academic program and various activities offered. That welcoming feeling has continued on throughout my time here from professors with open door policies to friendly staff and students.”

I am most proud of is ‘making it’ as an immigrant. I came here technically as an international student and put myself through school (and continue to put myself through school) on my own. I’ve been able to adapt to this country, gain a bachelors degree, and eventually a J.D. despite the million financial and legal obstacles along the way. In short, my biggest accomplishment is my education.

I believe that we all have a duty to leave this world in a better place than we found it, and if we are capable of making positive change then we have a responsibility to do so.

I plan to incorporate my interest of the Legal Field, Politics, and Technology to help shape Mississippi. I not only desire to represent individuals with the utmost integrity, but I also would like to place myself in a position to give back. I feel that the legal field could benefit greatly from more involvement from all backgrounds of individuals.  I believe Mississippi is one of the few final frontiers that has the potential to be a big influencer in the world of business, policy, and innovation, and I can’t wait to be apart of the journey to make sure that happens.
