Return On Saturday, August 28th, as we approach the end of summer and the beginning of the 2021/22 school year, CLICKS will present our next virtual townhall for teens and adults. As we know, our communities and schools face many challenges when it comes to the decision of returning to in-person learning. Long-standing systemic health and social inequities have put many racial and ethnic minority groups – people who identify as American Indian/Alaska Native, Black, and Hispanic are disproportionately affected by COVID-19; these disparities have also emerged among children. The absence of in-person educational options also creates disadvantages for youth, particularly those in low-resourced communities who might be at an educational disadvantage. Students might be less likely to have access to technology to facilitate virtual learning and more likely to rely on school-supported resources such as school meal programs, special education and related services, counseling, and after-school programs. Some parents and caregivers might have less-flexible jobs that do not permit staying at home to provide childcare and aid with virtual learning if schools are closed to in-person instruction.
There are a plethora of concerns, and we plan to talk about it! How can we ensure a safe return to school for our youth? We will share public health guidelines and tips from the Center for Disease Control, and the World Health Organization, as well as have healthcare professionals and school officials present to answer questions.
